While it isn’t a necessity to feed smaller dogs a more specialised diet, there can be benefits in doing so. Smaller dogs burn calories faster than larger ones, meaning that they can reap greater benefits from foods that are more calorie dense to keep their weight in check.

What’s more, the smaller proportions of their stomachs and mouths mean that smaller kibble sizes are more digestible for smaller toy dogs. It’s also accepted that small dogs live longer than larger ones, which can mean they’re likely to develop long-term health issues that their food can counteract.

Small dogs can eat both wet and dry food. Wet food is easier for them to swallow compared to large pieces of kibble, but smaller kibble sizes can circumvent this.
